Toggle Switches and Modes Shortcut in After Effects

This guide explains how to quickly toggle between the Switches and Modes columns in Adobe After Effects using keyboard shortcuts and interface controls. Managing these timeline panels is essential for a fast workflow, as it allows you to switch between layer properties and compositing controls without cluttering your workspace.

The Keyboard Shortcut

The default keyboard shortcut to toggle between the Switches and Modes columns in Adobe After Effects is F4.

Pressing F4 instantly flips the timeline view between the active switches and the blending modes. On macOS, depending on your keyboard settings, you may need to press Fn + F4 if your function keys are mapped to system controls like brightness and volume.

Interface Toggle Button

If you prefer using the mouse, you can click the Toggle Switches / Modes button located at the bottom of the Timeline panel. It appears as a pill-shaped button centered directly beneath the layer list. Clicking it performs the exact same action as pressing F4.

Differences Between Switches and Modes

Understanding what each view controls helps you know when to toggle:

  • Switches Column: Controls operational layer behaviors, including Shy (hiding layers), Continuous Rasterization / Collapse Transformations, Quality and Sampling, Effects on/off, Frame Blending, Motion Blur, Adjustment Layer status, and the 3D Layer switch.
  • Modes Column: Controls layer interaction and compositing, including Blending Modes (such as Multiply, Screen, or Overlay), Preserve Underlying Transparency, and Track Matte assignments (Alpha, Luma, and inverted mattes).

How to View Both Switches and Modes Simultaneously

If you have sufficient screen space and prefer not to toggle between the two views, you can display both columns at the same time:

  1. Right-click on any column header in the Timeline (such as "Source Name" or "Layer Name").
  2. Hover over Columns in the contextual menu.
  3. Ensure both Switches and Modes have checkmarks next to them.

Alternatively, look at the bottom-left corner of the Timeline panel. You will find three small icons: Layer Switches, Transfer Controls (Modes), and In/Out/Duration/Stretch. Clicking these icons toggles the permanent visibility of each respective section.
