Reveal Expression Shortcut in After Effects

Managing expressions in Adobe After Effects can become cumbersome when dealing with complex compositions containing dozens of animated layers. This guide provides the exact keyboard shortcut required to instantly reveal all properties driven by expressions, streamlining your motion graphics workflow and saving you from manually twirling open layer hierarchies.

The shortcut to reveal only the properties with expressions in Adobe After Effects is pressing the E key twice in rapid succession (EE).

How to Use the Shortcut

  1. Reveal on a Single Layer: Select the specific layer in your timeline and press EE. The layer will expand to show only the properties that have active expressions applied to them, alongside the expression editor field.
  2. Reveal Across Multiple Layers: Select multiple layers using Shift or Ctrl (Windows) / Cmd (Mac) and press EE. Every selected layer will reveal its active expressions simultaneously.
  3. Reveal All Expressions in a Composition: Deselect all layers by clicking an empty area in the timeline (or pressing F2), then press EE. After Effects will search the entire active composition and expand every layer containing an expression.

Managing Revealed Expressions

  • Hiding the Expressions: Pressing EE a second time will collapse the revealed properties, returning the layer to its closed state. Alternatively, pressing the single key ` (accent grave) or U** will help manage or hide property views.
  • Adding Expressions Quickly: To add an expression to a property in the first place, hold Alt (Windows) or Option (Mac) and click the stopwatch icon next to any animatable property.

Using the EE shortcut prevents clutter in your timeline by isolating dynamic, code-driven properties from standard keyframed properties, allowing you to quickly debug, edit, or remove code without navigating deep transform or effect stacks.
