Replace Premiere Clip with After Effects Composition
Adobe Dynamic Link allows video editors to seamlessly send footage from Adobe Premiere Pro directly into Adobe After Effects without exporting intermediate files. This guide explains how to replace a Premiere Pro clip with a linked After Effects composition, configure your project files, make your visual effects edits, and ensure smooth playback in your primary timeline.
Step 1: Prepare Your Clip in Premiere Pro
Before converting the clip, make any necessary basic cuts in your Premiere Pro timeline. It is best practice to duplicate the clip to an upper track and hide or mute the original so you maintain an untouched backup of the edit.
Step 2: Replace with After Effects Composition
- Right-click the targeted clip (or select multiple clips) in the Premiere Pro timeline.
- Select Replace with After Effects Composition from the context menu.
- Adobe After Effects will launch automatically if it is not already open.
Step 3: Set Up the After Effects Project
- A Save As dialog box will appear in After Effects
prompting you to name and save your project file
(
.aep). - Choose a file name and save it in your project directory, ideally alongside your Premiere Pro project file.
- Once saved, After Effects will open a new composition matching the exact frame rate, dimensions, duration, and in/out points of the clip from Premiere Pro.
Step 4: Perform Your Edits in After Effects
Add any required visual effects, motion graphics, 3D tracking, or compositing layers inside After Effects.
Once your work is complete, press Ctrl + S (Windows) or Cmd + S (macOS) to save the After Effects project.
Step 5: Verify the Dynamic Link in Premiere Pro
Switch back to Premiere Pro. The original clip on your timeline has now been replaced with a dynamically linked composition, represented by a linked After Effects icon and a pink clip color by default.
Any changes saved in After Effects will immediately reflect inside Premiere Pro without manual re-importing or rendering.
Playback Optimization
Because dynamically linked compositions require significant processing power, playback in Premiere Pro may drop frames. To ensure smooth playback:
- Set playback resolution to 1/2 or 1/4 in the Program Monitor.
- Mark an In and Out point around the dynamic link clip and go to Sequence > Render In to Out to generate a local preview render.
