How to Use the Shy Switch in After Effects

Managing complex compositions in Adobe After Effects often results in crowded timelines with dozens or hundreds of layers. The Shy Switch is a built-in organizational feature designed to declutter your workspace by temporarily hiding designated layers from the timeline panel without deleting them, turning off their visibility in the viewer, or affecting their final render output. This article explains what the Shy Switch is, how its two-part activation system works, and how to use it to streamline your motion graphics workflow.

What Is the Shy Switch?

The Shy Switch is represented by an icon of a small cartoon character peeking over a wall. Its primary function is timeline management. In motion design, compositions frequently contain background solids, adjustment layers, null objects, or locked audio tracks that are finished and no longer require active editing. While these layers must remain functional within the project, having them constantly visible in the timeline takes up valuable vertical screen space. Enabling the Shy property allows you to tuck these inactive layers out of sight.

Crucially, "shying" a layer does not mute its audio, disable its visual output in the Composition panel, or prevent it from rendering. It solely affects the layer's visibility inside the Timeline panel.

The Two-Step Process to Hide Layers

Hiding layers using the Shy feature requires activating two separate controls: the Layer Shy Switch and the Master Shy Switch.

1. Mark Individual Layers as "Shy"

In the Timeline panel, locate the column containing layer switches (between the layer source name and the parent/link options).

  • Find the layer you want to hide.
  • Click the Shy icon column for that layer. The icon will change to show the character ducking down behind the wall, indicating that the layer is designated as shy.
  • You can designate multiple layers at once by selecting them and clicking the icon, or by clicking and dragging down the column across multiple layers.

2. Enable the Master Shy Button

Marking a layer as shy does not automatically make it disappear. To execute the hide command:

  • Look at the top of the Timeline panel, next to the search bar and composition settings, to find the Master Shy Switch (the larger shy icon).
  • Click the Master Shy Switch to toggle it on.
  • Instantly, every layer with an active Shy Switch will vanish from your timeline list.

Unhiding Shy Layers

To view and edit hidden layers again, click the Master Shy Switch at the top of the Timeline panel to turn it off. All hidden layers will immediately reappear in their original stack order with their Shy switches still active, allowing you to make your adjustments and toggle the Master Shy Switch back on when you are finished.
