How to Use Proportional Grid in After Effects

Framing visual elements accurately is critical for creating balanced motion graphics and video layouts. This guide covers how to enable, customize, and use the Proportional Grid in Adobe After Effects to establish professional visual hierarchy, apply design rules like the Rule of Thirds, and keep your compositions aligned across different aspect ratios.

What Is the Proportional Grid?

Unlike the standard Grid in After Effects, which uses fixed pixel dimensions, the Proportional Grid divides your composition into equal percentage-based sections. Because it is relative rather than absolute, it dynamically scales with your composition's resolution and aspect ratio, making it an ideal tool for balanced visual framing.

How to Enable the Proportional Grid

  1. Open your composition in the Composition panel.
  2. Locate the Choose grid and guide options button at the bottom of the Composition panel (the icon resembles a small grid).
  3. Click the icon and select Proportional Grid from the dropdown menu.
  4. Alternatively, use the keyboard shortcut:
    • Windows: Alt + '
    • macOS: Option + '

The grid will instantly overlay your footage or artwork.

How to Customize Proportional Grid Settings

By default, the Proportional Grid may not match your intended layout structure. To adjust the number of divisions:

  1. Open the preferences menu:
    • Windows: Go to Edit > Preferences > Grids & Guides.
    • macOS: Go to After Effects > Settings (or Preferences) > Grids & Guides.
  2. Scroll to the Proportional Grid section.
  3. Adjust the Horizontal and Vertical division values:
    • Rule of Thirds: Set both values to 3 x 3. This creates nine equal boxes with intersections that serve as prime focal points for subjects and text.
    • Center Framing / Quadrants: Set both values to 2 x 2 or 4 x 4 to identify the exact visual center and balance symmetrical graphics.
  4. Change the grid Color if the current line color blends into your background footage.
  5. Click OK to apply the changes.

Best Practices for Framing

  • Focal Point Placement: When using a 3x3 grid, position your key visual interest—such as an actor's eyes, a product hero shot, or a call-to-action—along the intersecting grid lines rather than dead center.
  • Aspect Ratio Adaptability: If you duplicate a 16:9 horizontal composition and reformat it to 9:16 vertical for social media, the Proportional Grid will automatically re-divide the new canvas proportionally without requiring manual recalculation.
  • Quick Toggling: Avoid leaving the grid active during color correction or final playback. Use the shortcut (Alt + ' / Option + ') to periodically toggle the grid on to verify alignment, then turn it off to review the unobstructed composition.
