How to Use Motion Sketch in Adobe After Effects
The Motion Sketch tool in Adobe After Effects allows you to record custom, organic motion paths in real time using your mouse or stylus, bypassing the need to plot keyframes manually. This guide covers how to prepare your layer, configure the Motion Sketch panel, record a freehand path, and refine the generated keyframes using the Smoother panel for polished, natural motion.
1. Open the Motion Sketch Panel
First, select the layer you wish to animate in your timeline. Navigate to the top menu and select Window > Motion Sketch. This will open the Motion Sketch panel, which contains the controls necessary to capture your movement.
2. Configure Your Capture Settings
Before recording, adjust the parameters inside the Motion Sketch panel to suit your project:
- Capture Speed: Set to 100% to record in real time. Lowering this percentage records your movement in slow motion, which speeds up playback, while raising it above 100% allows for faster recording that plays back slower.
- Smoothing: Controls how many keyframes After Effects generates. A value of 1 records nearly every movement, while higher values automatically average out and reduce the number of keyframes, yielding a smoother path.
- Show: Choose Wireframe to see a simple outline of your layer during recording, which reduces processing lag, or Background to see other composition elements for visual reference.
3. Record Your Hand-Drawn Path
Move the Current Time Indicator (CTI) to the exact frame where you want the animation to begin. In the Motion Sketch panel, click the Start Capture button.
Once clicked, the tool enters a ready state. Click and hold inside the Composition panel to begin drawing. After Effects automatically begins playback and records the path of your cursor in real time. When you are finished, release the mouse button or stylus to stop the recording. After Effects will automatically convert your drawn path into standard Position keyframes on the selected layer.
4. Refine the Path with the Smoother
Real-time recording often creates an excessive number of keyframes, which can lead to jittery movement. To clean up the animation:
- Select the layer and press P to reveal the Position property.
- Select all the generated Position keyframes.
- Go to Window > Smoother to open the Smoother panel.
- Set the Apply To field to Spatial Path.
- Set a Tolerance value (typically between 5 and 20) and click Apply.
The Smoother will delete redundant keyframes while preserving the general shape of your hand-drawn curve, resulting in fluid, natural animation.
