How to Use Color Management in After Effects
Proper color management in Adobe After Effects ensures that assets from various cameras, 3D applications, and graphic tools blend seamlessly and display accurately across different screens. This guide covers how to set up your project working space, choose between native Adobe Color Management and OpenColorIO (OCIO/ACES), interpret input media profiles correctly, and output your final composite to the intended delivery standard.
Setting Up the Project Color Working Space
To establish your project-wide color baseline, open Project Settings by clicking the project settings icon at the bottom of the Project panel or navigating to File > Project Settings and selecting the Color tab.
- Select a Color Engine: After Effects offers two
engines:
- Adobe Color Management: Ideal for standard video, web, and broadcast workflows (e.g., Rec.709, sRGB).
- OCIO / ACES: Recommended for feature films, high-end VFX, and modern multi-camera pipelines requiring an ACEScg or custom config workflow.
- Choose Bit Depth: Set your color depth according to
your project's technical requirements:
- 8-bpc: Suitable for simple motion graphics and web delivery.
- 16-bpc: Prevents banding in subtle gradients and standard compositing.
- 32-bpc (Floating Point): Required for high dynamic range (HDR) assets, linear light compositing, and photorealistic lighting/blur calculations.
- Assign a Working Space: Select the color profile
that matches your pipeline:
- Rec.709 Gamma 2.4: Standard for broadcast television.
- sRGB IEC61966-2.1: Standard for web and digital-only delivery.
- ACEScg (via OCIO): Standard for CGI integration and wide-gamut film workflows.
- Linearize Working Space: If working in 32-bit float under the Adobe engine, check Linearize Working Space. This ensures light interacts physically correctly when compositing, applying blurs, and blending layers.
Interpreting Footage Color Profiles
After Effects automatically assigns color spaces to standard media, but camera raw files, log profiles, and non-standard assets require manual assignment:
- Right-click the asset in the Project panel and select Interpret Footage > Main.
- Go to the Color tab.
- Under Color Space, override the default profile by selecting the specific profile or color space used during capture (e.g., Sony S-Gamut3.Cine/S-Log3, ARRI LogC, or Panasonic V-Log).
- After Effects will automatically transform the asset from its native color space into the project's designated working space.
Enabling Display Color Management
To ensure your canvas accurately represents colors based on your physical monitor's calibration:
- Navigate to the top menu and select View > Use Display Color Management.
- Ensure your operating system has the correct ICC profile assigned to your monitor. After Effects reads this system profile and converts the working space to your display space for viewing only, without altering the underlying pixel values.
Exporting and Output Transforms
When your project is ready for delivery, the working space must be transformed into the target display format:
- Add your composition to the Render Queue (Composition > Add to Render Queue).
- Click on the Output Module settings.
- Select the Color tab.
- In the Color Space dropdown, select the target delivery profile (such as Rec.709 for broadcast/YouTube or sRGB for web assets).
- After Effects converts the composite from the working color space to the designated output space during the render process, preserving color fidelity across client displays.
