How to Use 3D LUTs for Color Grading in After Effects

Applying 3D Look-Up Tables (LUTs) in Adobe After Effects is an essential workflow for transforming flat log footage, balancing colors, and achieving a professional cinematic grade. This guide covers the complete step-by-step process of loading and applying 3D LUTs using native After Effects tools, adjusting their intensity, and fine-tuning your final look for the best visual results.

Step 1: Set Up Your Project and Composition

  1. Open Adobe After Effects and import your video footage by dragging it into the Project panel.
  2. Drag your clip onto the New Composition icon at the bottom of the Project panel to create a sequence that matches the clip's frame rate and resolution.
  3. To keep your workflow non-destructive, create an adjustment layer. Go to the top menu and select Layer > New > Adjustment Layer (or press Ctrl + Alt + Y on Windows / Cmd + Option + Y on Mac). Rename this layer "Color Grade."

Step 2: Apply the Lumetri Color Effect

While After Effects includes a dedicated "Apply Color LUT" effect, the Lumetri Color engine is the industry-standard choice because it allows for granular control over the LUT's intensity and color parameters.

  1. Select your Adjustment Layer in the timeline.
  2. Open the Effects & Presets panel (go to Window > Effects & Presets if it is not visible).
  3. Type Lumetri Color into the search bar.
  4. Drag and drop the Lumetri Color effect onto your Adjustment Layer.

Step 3: Load Your 3D LUT

Within the Effect Controls panel, Lumetri Color offers two primary sections to apply a 3D LUT (.cube or .3dl format):

Method A: Technical / Input LUT (Basic Correction)

Use this option if you are working with camera log profiles (such as Sony S-Log, Canon C-Log, or ARRI LogC) and need to convert the footage to a standard Rec.709 color space.

  1. Expand the Basic Correction tab in the Lumetri Color effect controls.
  2. Click the drop-down menu next to Input LUT.
  3. Select Browse... to open your file explorer.
  4. Navigate to your desired .cube file, select it, and click Open.

Method B: Stylistic / Creative LUT (Creative Tab)

Use this option if your footage is already in Rec.709 and you want to apply a stylistic or cinematic look. This method includes an intensity slider.

  1. Expand the Creative tab in the Lumetri Color effect controls.
  2. Click the drop-down menu next to Look.
  3. Select Browse..., choose your 3D LUT file, and click Open.
  4. Use the Intensity slider directly beneath the Look drop-down to dial the strength of the LUT up or down (100 is standard, while lower values offer a more subtle grade).

Step 4: Fine-Tune the Grade

A 3D LUT is rarely a one-click final fix. After applying the LUT, refine the underlying image to prevent clipped highlights or crushed shadows:

  • Exposure and Contrast: Adjust the Exposure, Highlights, and Shadows under the Basic Correction tab to correct for differences in lighting.
  • White Balance: Use the Temperature and Tint sliders to remove unwanted color casts before the LUT processes the image.
  • Saturation: Increase or decrease overall saturation under the Creative tab to fit the tone of your project.

Alternative: Using the Native "Apply Color LUT" Effect

If you need a lightweight alternative without the full Lumetri Color interface:

  1. Select your target footage layer or adjustment layer.
  2. Go to Effect > Utility > Apply Color LUT.
  3. A file browser window will open automatically.
  4. Choose your .cube or .3dl file and click Open.
  5. To adjust the intensity using this method, modify the Opacity of the Adjustment Layer containing the effect.
