How to Fix Rolling Shutter in After Effects
Rolling shutter artifacts, often characterized by a wobbly "jello" effect or slanted vertical lines during fast pans, occur frequently when shooting with digital CMOS sensors. This guide details how to correct these distortions using the built-in Rolling Shutter Repair effect in Adobe After Effects. By applying this native tool and configuring a few key parameters, you can stabilize and straighten your footage quickly without third-party plugins.
Step 1: Import Footage and Create a Composition
- Open Adobe After Effects and import your distorted video file
(
File>Import>File). - Drag the video clip onto the New Composition icon at the bottom of the Project panel to generate a composition matching your footage settings.
Step 2: Apply the Rolling Shutter Repair Effect
- Select your video layer in the timeline.
- Open the Effects & Presets panel
(
Window>Effects & Presets). - Type
Rolling Shutter Repairinto the search field. - Drag and drop the Rolling Shutter Repair effect (located under the Distort category) directly onto your layer.
Step 3: Configure the Core Settings
Once applied, navigate to the Effect Controls panel to configure the repair settings:
- Rate: This controls the amount of correction applied. By default, After Effects attempts to calculate this automatically. If the jello effect persists, you can manually adjust this value up or down until vertical lines appear straight during movement.
- Scan Direction: Most modern cameras scan lines from the top to the bottom of the sensor. Keep this set to Top to Bottom. If the footage was shot upside down or on a specialty camera, change this to Bottom to Top.
Step 4: Fine-Tune with Advanced Settings
Expand the Advanced section in the Effect Controls panel for additional control:
- Method:
- Warp: The default setting. It divides the frame into segments and shifts them to counteract the distortion. This method is fast and works well for simple camera pans.
- Pixel Motion: Tracks pixel movement across frames. Choose this option if your shot features complex, multi-directional motion or moving objects within the frame.
- Detailed Analysis: Check this box if the footage contains rapid motion that the basic algorithm fails to resolve properly. This increases rendering time but produces cleaner results on complex footage.
- Pixel Motion Detail: If using the Pixel Motion method, increasing this value enhances accuracy at the cost of processing speed.
Step 5: Check and Resolve Edge Artifacts
Because the effect warps the image geometry to fix slant, the edges of the frame may occasionally pull inward, revealing black borders.
To fix this:
- Select the layer and press
Sto open the Scale property. - Slightly increase the scale (e.g., 102% to 105%) to hide any exposed borders beyond the composition boundaries.
