How to Export Transparent Video in After Effects
Exporting a video with a transparent background in Adobe After Effects requires rendering with an alpha channel. This guide covers how to verify your composition's transparency, configure the Render Queue, select the appropriate file formats like QuickTime ProRes 4444, and adjust your channel settings to ensure your exported graphics, lower thirds, or overlays maintain their transparency in any video editing software.
Step 1: Verify Transparency in Your Composition
Before exporting, confirm that your composition actually contains transparent areas rather than a solid background.
- Open your composition in After Effects.
- Click the Toggle Transparency Grid button at the bottom of the Composition panel (it looks like a checkerboard).
- If the checkerboard pattern appears behind your elements, your transparency is intact. If a solid color remains, you must hide or delete the background layer before proceeding.
Step 2: Add the Composition to the Render Queue
Avoid using Adobe Media Encoder for alpha exports if possible, as the native After Effects Render Queue provides the most reliable settings for alpha channels.
- Select your composition in the timeline or Project panel.
- Go to the top menu and select Composition > Add to Render Queue, or press Ctrl + M (Windows) / Cmd + M (Mac).
Step 3: Configure Output Module Settings
This is the critical step where the alpha channel is enabled.
- In the Render Queue panel at the bottom of the screen, locate your job and click on the blue text next to Output Module (default is usually "Lossless" or "High Quality").
- In the Output Module Settings window, set the Format dropdown to QuickTime.
- Under the Video Output section:
- Change Channels from "RGB" to RGB + Alpha.
- Set Depth to Millions of Colors+ (the "+" signifies alpha support).
- Choose your Color mode: Premultiplied (Matted) is the standard default, while Straight (Unmult) is preferred if your video editor requests non-premultiplied alpha to avoid dark halos around edges.
Step 4: Choose the Right Video Codec
Not all QuickTime codecs support transparency. You must select a codec with alpha capabilities:
- Still inside the Output Module Settings window, click Format Options.
- Under Video Codec, choose one of the following:
- Apple ProRes 4444 (Recommended): Offers high visual quality, efficient file sizes, and universal compatibility across most modern editing platforms.
- Animation: A lossless legacy codec that preserves exact pixel data but produces exceptionally large file sizes.
- GoPro CineForm: Set the color to RGB + Alpha (16-bit) if Apple ProRes is unavailable on your system.
- Click OK to close the Format Options, then click OK again to exit Output Module Settings.
Step 5: Render the File
- Click the blue text next to Output To to name your file and choose a save location on your computer.
- Click the Render button on the right side of the Render Queue panel.
Once the render finishes, the resulting .mov file will
contain a fully functional alpha channel ready to overlay on footage in
Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, DaVinci Resolve, or other editing
applications.
