How to Customize Workspaces in After Effects

Customizing your Adobe After Effects workspace allows you to streamline your motion design and video editing workflow by keeping critical tools accessible while eliminating interface clutter. This guide explains how to reposition panels, create floating windows for multi-monitor setups, save custom workspace presets, and manage your configurations to maximize efficiency across different production stages.

Choosing and Exploring Default Workspaces

After Effects includes several pre-built workspaces tailored to specific tasks, such as Color, Effects, Motion Tracking, and Text.

To explore them:

  1. Look at the Workspace bar along the top-right of the interface, or go to Window > Workspace.
  2. Select a preset (such as Default, Animation, or Minimal) to see how panel arrangements shift to prioritize relevant tools.

Moving, Docking, and Grouping Panels

The core of workspace customization lies in arranging panels to match how you naturally navigate projects.

  • Docking Panels: Click and drag a panel's tab (the name of the panel). Drop zones will highlight in blue as you drag over other panels. Drop the panel onto an edge zone (top, bottom, left, or right) to dock it adjacent to an existing panel.
  • Creating Tab Groups: Drag a panel tab and drop it directly onto the center of another panel. This groups them together into tabs, saving screen real estate.
  • Resizing Panels: Hover your cursor over the border line between any two panels until a double-sided arrow appears, then click and drag to adjust width or height.

Undocking Panels for Multi-Monitor Setups

If you work with multiple monitors, undocking panels gives you more space for the Timeline and Composition viewers.

  1. Click the panel menu (the three horizontal lines next to the panel name).
  2. Select Undock Panel (or Undock Frame to detach the entire group).
  3. Alternatively, hold Ctrl (Windows) or Cmd (macOS) and drag the panel tab away from the interface.
  4. Drag the newly created floating window to your second monitor and resize it as needed.

Opening Hidden Panels

If a specific tool is missing from your screen:

  1. Open the Window menu at the top of the application.
  2. Panels with checkmarks are currently open; unchecked panels are closed.
  3. Click any unchecked panel (such as Align, Character, or Tracker) to add it to your current layout, then dock it into your preferred position.

Saving Your Custom Workspace

Once your panels are organized to your liking, save the configuration so you do not lose it when switching projects.

  1. Go to Window > Workspace > Save as New Workspace...
  2. Enter a descriptive name (e.g., "Main Editing," "Cleanup," or "Dual Monitor").
  3. Click OK.

Your new workspace will now appear in the Workspace bar and under the Window > Workspace menu.

Resetting and Managing Workspaces

  • Reset Layout: If panels accidentally shift out of place, go to Window > Workspace > Reset [Workspace Name] to Saved Layout to restore your original setup.
  • Save Over Existing: If you make minor adjustments to an established workspace, choose Window > Workspace > Save Changes to this Workspace.
  • Delete or Reorder: To remove outdated presets or change the order in which they appear on the bar, go to Window > Workspace > Edit Workspaces..., select the layout, and use the dialog options to sort or delete it.
