How to Convert Text to Shape Layers in After Effects

Converting text into shape layers in Adobe After Effects allows motion designers to unlock advanced animation possibilities that standard text animators cannot achieve. By turning typographic characters into individual vector paths, you gain access to shape operators like Trim Paths and Wiggle Paths, vertex-level point manipulation, and detailed stroke controls. This guide outlines the exact steps to convert your text into editable vector shapes and explores the benefits and limitations of this workflow.

Steps to Convert Text to Shapes

  1. Select the Text Layer: In your timeline panel, click to highlight the text layer you want to convert.
  2. Access the Create Menu: Right-click the text layer in the timeline, navigate to Create, and select Create Shapes from Text. Alternatively, go to the top application menu and choose Layer > Create > Create Shapes from Text.
  3. Inspect the Result: After Effects will automatically generate a new shape layer directly above your text layer, named [Text Name] Outlines. The original text layer will automatically be muted (its visibility eye icon will be turned off) to prevent duplicate visuals.

What Happens After Conversion

Once converted, expanding the new shape layer reveals a Contents group containing individual vector groups for every letter in your text. Each letter contains its own:

  • Path: The outline data of the character, allowing you to manipulate individual anchor points using the Pen tool.
  • Fill: Color and opacity properties specific to that character.
  • Stroke: Outline properties for width, color, and dash patterns.
  • Transform Controls: Local anchor points, position, scale, rotation, and opacity for that specific letter.

Key Advantages of Using Shape Layers

  • Shape Modifiers: You can add operators such as Trim Paths (ideal for write-on and line drawing effects), Repeater, Twist, Pucker & Bloat, and Wiggle Paths directly to your typography.
  • Path Morphing: By keyframing the Path property, you can smoothly morph letters into other shapes, symbols, or characters.
  • Anchor Point Control: You can alter the shape of specific letterforms by dragging individual vertices, creating custom typography adjustments directly inside After Effects.

Important Considerations

  • Loss of Text Editability: Once converted, the new layer is strictly vector artwork. You cannot change the font, retype words, or alter tracking and kerning through the Character panel.
  • Effects Do Not Transfer: Any native effects or text animators applied to the original text layer will not transfer to the newly generated shape layer. You must reapply or copy those effects manually.
  • Performance: Text with large amounts of copy will generate hundreds of individual paths, which can slow down viewport performance and rendering times. Limit this technique to titles, logos, and short phrases for optimal efficiency.
