How to Assign Color Profiles in After Effects

Managing color accuracy in Adobe After Effects ensures that your footage, motion graphics, and final exports display consistently across various screens and media players. This guide explains how to properly assign and convert color profiles in After Effects, walking through the process of reinterpreting source footage profiles, using the Color Profile Converter effect, and managing your project's overall working color space.

Assigning vs. Converting Color Profiles

Before applying changes, it is essential to understand the difference between assigning and converting a color profile:

  • Assigning a profile: Instructs After Effects on how to interpret the existing RGB values of an asset without altering the underlying data. This changes how the colors appear on screen based on the chosen profile definition.
  • Converting a profile: Modifies the RGB values of the pixels to preserve the visual appearance of the image when shifting from one color space to another.

Method 1: Assign a Color Profile to Imported Footage

When After Effects does not automatically detect the correct color profile for an imported file, you can manually assign one using the Interpret Footage settings.

  1. Locate your asset in the Project panel.
  2. Right-click the asset, navigate to Interpret Footage, and select Main (or press Ctrl+Alt+G on Windows / Cmd+Option+G on macOS).
  3. Click the Color (or Color Management) tab at the top of the dialog box.
  4. Under the Assign Profile dropdown menu, select the correct color profile that matches your source media (such as Rec. 709, sRGB, or a specific camera profile).
  5. Click OK to apply the assignment.

After Effects will now interpret the color values of the footage based on the newly assigned profile and map them accurately into your project’s working space.

Method 2: Convert Profiles Using the Color Profile Converter Effect

If you need to convert colors directly on a layer or within a specific point in your compositing pipeline, use the built-in Color Profile Converter effect.

  1. Select the layer you want to adjust in your timeline.
  2. Go to the top menu and select Effect > Utility > Color Profile Converter.
  3. In the Effect Controls panel, locate the Input Profile setting and choose the profile representing your layer's current state (or leave it as Project Working Space).
  4. Set the Output Profile to the color space you want to convert the layer into.
  5. Choose an Intent (such as Relative Colorimetric or Perceptual) to dictate how out-of-gamut colors are handled.
  6. Check or uncheck Linearize Input Space or Linearize Output Space depending on whether your workflow requires linear gamma calculations for blending and lighting.

Configuring the Project Color Working Space

To ensure assigned and converted profiles display and blend correctly, define your project's working space:

  1. Go to File > Project Settings and select the Color tab.
  2. Select your desired color space from the Working Space dropdown menu (commonly Rec.709 Gamma 2.4 for broadcast video or sRGB IEC61966-2.1 for web content).
  3. Set the depth to 16 bpc or 32 bpc (float) to prevent color banding and clipping during conversions.
  4. Click OK to confirm.
