Delete Layer Shortcut in Adobe After Effects
Managing layers efficiently in Adobe After Effects is essential for maintaining a clean timeline and speeding up your motion graphics workflow. This guide covers the primary keyboard shortcuts used to delete layers on both Windows and macOS, explains how to remove single or multiple layers instantly, and details alternative methods like cutting layers or trimming layer durations.
The Primary Delete Shortcut
To delete a layer in Adobe After Effects, select the target layer in your Timeline panel and use the following keyboard shortcut:
- Windows: Press Delete or Backspace.
- macOS: Press Delete (the backspace key) or Fn + Delete (forward delete on compact Mac keyboards).
Once pressed, the selected layer is instantly removed from the active composition without altering the rest of your project assets in the Project panel.
Deleting Multiple Layers
To remove multiple layers simultaneously:
- Hold Ctrl (Windows) or Cmd (macOS) and click each layer you want to remove.
- Alternatively, select the first layer, hold Shift, and click the last layer to select a continuous range.
- Press Delete or Backspace to remove all selected layers at once.
Cut vs. Delete
If you want to remove a layer from the timeline while copying it to your clipboard for later use, use the Cut command:
- Windows: Ctrl + X
- macOS: Cmd + X
This removes the layer from the current composition and allows you to paste it into another composition using Ctrl + V (Windows) or Cmd + V (macOS).
Deleting Layer Content vs. Deleting the Entire Layer
- Deleting the Layer: Ensure the layer name/bar is highlighted in the Timeline panel before pressing Delete.
- Deleting an Effect or Mask: If you only want to remove a specific effect, mask, or keyframe rather than the entire layer, expand the layer properties, click the specific property name, and press Delete.
