Data-Driven Animation: Import JSON in After Effects
Data-driven animation is a workflow that uses external structured data to automate and control motion graphics, allowing animators to produce scalable, templated visuals efficiently. This article explains the fundamentals of data-driven animation, highlights its practical benefits, and provides a direct, step-by-step guide on how to import and link JSON data within Adobe After Effects.
What Is Data-Driven Animation?
Data-driven animation is the process of linking visual attributes—such as text values, scale, color, position, or rotation—directly to external data files rather than manually setting keyframes. Instead of creating individual graphics for dozens or hundreds of variations, animators create a single template that pulls values from formats like JSON (JavaScript Object Notation), CSV (Comma-Separated Values), or TSV (Tab-Separated Values).
Common use cases include:
- Infographics and Charts: Dynamically updating line graphs, bar charts, and numerical counters based on live or archived metrics.
- Localized or Multi-Language Content: Swapping copy and layouts automatically across different languages using a central text feed.
- Personalized Videos: Generating mass-customized video content containing unique user details, names, or performance summaries.
How to Import and Use JSON in After Effects
Adobe After Effects natively supports JSON files, treating them as data layers where individual keys and values can be referenced via expressions.
Step 1: Format the JSON File
Ensure your JSON file is properly formatted using valid syntax. For best results in After Effects, structure data into readable arrays or nested objects.
Example:
{
"statName": "Quarterly Growth",
"statValue": 85,
"barScale": [85, 100]
}Step 2: Import the JSON File
- Open your project in Adobe After Effects.
- Go to File > Import > File... (or press
Ctrl+Ion Windows,Cmd+Ion macOS). - Select your
.jsonfile and click Import. Alternatively, drag and drop the file directly into the Project panel.
Step 3: Add the Data to a Composition
- Drag the imported JSON file from the Project panel into your active Timeline panel.
- The JSON asset will appear as a data layer. Expand the layer by clicking its arrow, then expand Data to view the parsed properties and streams contained in the file.
Step 4: Link Layer Properties to the Data
You can link any animatable property (such as Source Text, Scale, or Opacity) to the JSON data using the Expression Pick Whip:
- Select the layer you want to drive (e.g., a text layer or a shape layer).
- Alt-click (Windows) or Option-click (macOS) the stopwatch next to the property you want to control (e.g., Source Text).
- Drag the expression pick whip (the spiral icon) to the specific data field inside the JSON layer in the timeline.
- After Effects will automatically generate an expression linking the
visual property directly to the JSON data point (e.g.,
thisComp.layer("data.json")("Data")("statValue")).
Step 5: Updating the Animation
Because the composition is linked to the external file, modifying the original JSON data on your drive and reloading or re-linking it in After Effects will immediately update all connected visuals without requiring manual keyframing.
