Create Shape Layers from Vector Art in After Effects
Converting vector artwork into native shape layers in Adobe After Effects unlocks powerful animation tools, such as path manipulation, trim paths, and shape repeaters, while maintaining infinite scalability. This guide covers the essential steps to prepare and import your vector files from Adobe Illustrator, execute the conversion command in After Effects, and manage the resulting layers efficiently for your animation workflow.
1. Prepare Vector Artwork in Illustrator
Before importing your artwork into After Effects, ensure your Adobe Illustrator file (.AI) is properly organized:
- Separate each element you intend to animate onto its own top-level layer in Illustrator. Sublayers within a single layer will merge into one group in After Effects.
- Expand complex strokes or unsupported effects (like certain gradients, blends, or brush styles) to avoid conversion errors.
- Save the file as a standard
.AIformat with "Create PDF Compatible File" checked.
2. Import Artwork into After Effects
- Open After Effects and go to File > Import >
File... (or press
Ctrl+Ion Windows /Cmd+Ion macOS). - Select your Illustrator file.
- In the import dialog, set Import As to Composition - Retain Layer Sizes. This preserves each layer's independent boundaries and dimensions.
- Click Import.
3. Add the Layer to Your Composition
Open the newly created composition or drag the imported vector layers into an existing timeline. If you plan to animate vector properties directly, make sure the layers are placed in the sequence you need.
4. Convert to Shape Layer
- In the timeline panel, select the vector layer (or multiple vector layers) you want to convert.
- Right-click on the selected layer(s).
- Navigate to Create and select Create Shapes from Vector Layer.
- Alternatively, select the layer and go to the top menu: Layer > Create > Create Shapes from Vector Layer.
After Effects will automatically generate a new shape layer directly above the original vector layer. The original vector layer will be muted (its visibility turned off) to serve as a backup.
5. Work with the Converted Shape Layer
Once converted, twist down the contents of the new shape layer to access individual paths, fills, strokes, and transform properties:
- Add Animators: Click the Add button next to "Contents" to apply parametric operators such as Trim Paths, Wiggle Paths, Repeater, or Twist.
- Edit Paths: Use the Pen Tool (G) to select and alter individual anchor points and bezier handles directly in the composition window.
- Organize Hierarchy: Illustrator groups appear as individual groups within the "Contents" property. Rename or delete unnecessary groups to keep your timeline clean and improve playback performance.
