Create Custom Animator Presets in After Effects
This guide explains the concept of preset saving in Adobe After Effects and provides a straightforward, step-by-step walkthrough for building, saving, and reusing custom animator presets. Learning this process allows motion designers to streamline repetitive workflows, maintain visual consistency across projects, and dramatically reduce production time.
What is Preset Saving in After Effects?
Preset saving is the process of storing a specific set of layer
properties, keyframes, expressions, and effects into a reusable file
with the .ffx extension. In the context of text and shape
layers, saving an animator preset packages Range Selectors, Wiggly
Selectors, and animated transformation properties (such as Position,
Scale, Tracking, and Opacity). Once saved, these presets can be applied
to any new layer with a single click, instantly replicating complex
motion behaviors without rebuilding them from scratch.
How to Create a Custom Text Animator
- Create a Text Layer: Select the Type Tool (Ctrl+T / Cmd+T), click on your composition canvas, and enter your sample text.
- Add an Animator: Twirl open the text layer options in the Timeline panel. Click the Animate button (represented by a small play icon next to "Text") and choose a property to animate, such as Position, Opacity, or Tracking.
- Configure the Animator Properties: Set the initial
offset values. For example, set the animator's Position
to
0, 100and Opacity to0%. - Adjust the Range Selector: Twirl open Range
Selector 1 and keyframe the Start or
Offset parameter from
0%to100%over your desired duration to generate the sequential transition. - Refine with Advanced Settings: Twirl open Advanced inside the Range Selector to modify parameters such as Based On (Characters, Words, or Lines), Shape (Ramp Up, Ramp Down, Smooth), and Randomize Order to define the exact animation style.
How to Save the Custom Animator Preset
- Select the Animator Properties: In the Timeline panel, click directly on the animator group you wish to save (e.g., Animator 1). You can select multiple animators or specific properties by holding down Ctrl (Windows) or Cmd (Mac). Ensure only the properties you want to export are highlighted.
- Open the Save Dialog: Navigate to the top menu and select Animation > Save Animation Preset..., or click the menu icon in the Effects & Presets panel and choose Save Animation Preset.
- Choose the Save Location: Save the
.ffxfile inside the default User Presets directory:- Windows:
Documents\Adobe\After Effects <version>\User Presets - macOS:
Documents/Adobe/After Effects <version>/User Presets
- Windows:
- Name the Preset: Provide a clear, descriptive name
(e.g.,
Text_SlideUp_FadeIn.ffx) and click Save.
Applying Your Custom Preset
To apply your saved preset in any future project:
- Select the target layer in your timeline.
- Open the Effects & Presets panel (Window > Effects & Presets).
- Twirl open Animation Presets > User Presets to find your saved file, or type its name directly into the search bar.
- Double-click the preset or drag it directly onto the target layer. The custom animators, selectors, and keyframes will be applied immediately relative to the current position of the playhead.
