Consolidate and Remove Unused Assets in After Effects

Large Adobe After Effects projects often become cluttered with imported footage, audio files, and graphics that are never used in the final compositions. Removing these redundant files and consolidating your media reduces project file sizes, improves software performance, and makes archiving or sharing your work significantly easier. This guide outlines the exact, step-by-step methods to delete unused footage, merge duplicate assets, and consolidate an entire project into an organized folder.

Step 1: Remove Unused Footage

The quickest way to clean up your project panel is by using the native "Remove Unused Footage" command. This command scans every composition in your project and automatically deletes any item from the Project panel that is not actively used in a timeline.

  1. Open your project in Adobe After Effects.
  2. Go to the top menu and click File.
  3. Hover over Dependencies and select Remove Unused Footage.
  4. A dialogue box will appear stating how many files were removed. Click OK.

Note: This action only removes items from the After Effects Project panel; it does not delete the original files from your hard drive.

Step 2: Consolidate Duplicate Footage

If you accidentally imported the same asset multiple times, After Effects treats each import as a separate instance. Consolidating footage replaces multiple instances with a single source item.

  1. Navigate to File in the top menu.
  2. Select Dependencies > Consolidate All Footage.
  3. After Effects will merge identical source files, keeping your project organized and cutting down on unnecessary asset references.

Step 3: Reduce the Project (Optional)

If you only need to preserve a specific composition and want to strip away every other comp and asset:

  1. In the Project panel, select the final composition (or compositions) you want to keep.
  2. Go to File > Dependencies > Reduce Project.
  3. After Effects will delete all compositions and source items that are not part of the selected composition hierarchy.

Step 4: Consolidate and Collect Files for Archiving

To gather all remaining, active media into a single self-contained directory alongside a clean project file:

  1. Go to File > Dependencies > Collect Files...
  2. In the dialogue window, set the Collect Source Files dropdown to All (or For Queued Comps if you only want render-ready assets).
  3. Ensure the option Generate Report Only is unchecked.
  4. Click Collect.
  5. Choose a destination folder on your drive and click Save.

After Effects will create a new folder containing a consolidated copy of your project file, a report detailing the assets, and a "Footage" folder holding only the files required by your active compositions.
