Collapse Switches and Modes in After Effects

Managing timeline real estate in Adobe After Effects is essential for an organized and efficient workflow. This guide explains how to collapse, hide, and toggle between the Layer Switches and Layer Modes panels using timeline interface buttons, column settings, and keyboard shortcuts to maximize your visible workspace.

Method 1: Use the Bottom-Left Timeline Pane Icons

To completely collapse and hide the switches and modes columns, use the small panel icons located in the bottom-left corner of the timeline panel:

  1. Locate the three small icons in the very bottom-left corner of the timeline window.
  2. Click the second icon from the left (Expand or Collapse the Layer Switches pane) to hide or show the Switches column (featuring options like Shy, Motion Blur, and 3D Layer).
  3. Click the third icon (Expand or Collapse the Transfer Controls pane) to hide or show the Modes column (featuring Blending Modes and Track Mattes).
  4. Deactivating both icons will fully collapse these sections, leaving only your layer names and essential properties visible.

Method 2: Toggle Between Panels Using F4

If you want to keep your timeline compact without permanently hiding your tools, you can switch between viewing Switches and Modes instead of displaying both at once:

  • Press F4 on your keyboard to instantly alternate between displaying the Layer Switches panel and the Transfer Controls (Modes) panel.
  • Alternatively, click the Toggle Switches / Modes button located at the bottom-center of the timeline panel.

Method 3: Use the Column Context Menu

You can also manually disable the panels through the timeline header menu:

  1. Right-click (or Control-click on macOS) on any column header inside the timeline (such as Layer Name or Source Name).
  2. Hover your cursor over Columns in the dropdown menu.
  3. Uncheck Switches to collapse the switches column.
  4. Uncheck Modes to collapse the modes column.
