Center Anchor Point Instantly in After Effects
Centering an anchor point in Adobe After Effects is essential for predictable scaling, rotation, and motion path animations. By default, After Effects often places the anchor point in the absolute center of the composition rather than the center of the specific layer or shape. This guide covers the quickest keyboard shortcuts, menu commands, and tool shortcuts to instantly center the anchor point to any layer's content, along with an automatic preference setting for new shape layers.
The Fastest Method: Keyboard Shortcut
The quickest way to center an anchor point to the center of your layer's visible content is via a single shortcut:
- Windows: Press
Ctrl + Alt + Home - macOS: Press
Cmd + Option + Home
Select one or multiple layers in your timeline, press the key combination, and the anchor point will snap directly to the center of the selected content instantly.
The Menu Bar Method
If you prefer using the application menu:
- Select the layer or layers in your timeline.
- Go to the top menu and click Layer.
- Hover over Transform.
- Select Center Anchor Point in Layer Content.
The Pan Behind Tool Method
You can also use the Pan Behind (Anchor Point) tool to quickly snap the anchor point:
- Select the layer in your timeline.
- Double-click the Pan Behind Tool icon in the top
toolbar (or press
Yto select the tool, then double-click its icon). - This action automatically resets and centers the anchor point to the middle of the selected layer.
Center the Layer to the Composition
If you want to center both the anchor point to the layer and then center the layer to the composition, use this sequence:
- Press
Ctrl + Alt + Home(Windows) orCmd + Option + Home(macOS) to center the anchor point. - Press
Ctrl + Home(Windows) orCmd + Home(macOS) to center the layer in the active composition viewport.
Setting It as Default for Shape Layers
To prevent new shape layers from creating anchor points in the center of the composition instead of the shape:
- Navigate to Edit > Preferences > General (Windows) or After Effects > Settings > General (macOS).
- Check the box labeled Center Anchor Point in New Shape Layers.
- Click OK.
Moving forward, whenever you draw a new parametric or custom shape, After Effects will automatically place the anchor point in the center of that shape's bounding box.
