After Effects Duplicate Layer Shortcut
Duplicating layers is a fundamental workflow technique in Adobe After Effects that saves time and streamlines the motion design process. This guide covers the standard keyboard shortcuts for duplicating layers on both Windows and macOS, explains how to use the shortcut effectively in your timeline, and highlights the difference between duplicating timeline layers and project assets.
The standard keyboard shortcut to duplicate a layer in Adobe After Effects is:
- Windows:
Ctrl + D - macOS:
Cmd + D
To use this shortcut, click on one or more layers in the Timeline or Composition panel to highlight them, then press the shortcut. After Effects will immediately create an exact copy of the selected layer and place it directly above the original in the layer stack.
Alternatively, you can duplicate layers using the application menu by selecting your layer and navigating to Edit > Duplicate.
When you duplicate a layer using this method:
- Properties and Effects: All keyframes, effects, masks, layer styles, expressions, and transform properties are carried over to the duplicate.
- In and Out Points: The duplicate retains the exact trimming and duration of the source layer.
- Naming: After Effects automatically numbers the new layer sequentially if the original layer ended in a number (for example, "Text 1" duplicates as "Text 2").
Duplicating Layers vs. Duplicating Compositions
It is important to distinguish between duplicating a layer in the timeline and duplicating a composition in the Project panel.
Using Ctrl + D or Cmd + D on a
pre-composition layer inside the timeline creates an instance of that
pre-comp. Any changes made inside that pre-comp will update across both
the original and the duplicated layer.
If you want to create an entirely independent copy of a
pre-composition where changes do not affect the original, select the
composition inside the Project Panel instead and press
Ctrl + D (Windows) or Cmd + D (macOS). Then,
replace the layer in your timeline with the newly duplicated project
asset.
